We were lucky enough to take part in Wagga’s Australia Day celebrations and see some local legends recognised in the official awards ceremony. At the mayoral reception at the Civic Theatre we had the chance to chat with Ray Pelletier, who has been volunteering with the police for 17 years, and Jim Elphick, who received a nomination for his contribution to sport (namely Tennis) throughout his 97 years!
Sarah made her first official guest speech as Miss Wagga Wagga 2017, and spoke about what being Australian meant to her. She spoke about family holidays to the beach, the importance of embracing the multicultural makeup of our community; and the mateship, camaraderie and ‘have a go’ attitude that Australians share. We were proud to see Alicia Quirk inducted into Wagga’s Hall of Fame, after hosting her for our Miss Wagga Wagga Quest 2017 High Tea, and spoke to new Citizen of the Year Dianne Jacobson about her tireless passion for the city’s Eisteddfod. We were also thrilled to see Australia Day Ambassador Warren Kermond tap dance!
We also participated in the citizenship ceremony at the Wagga Beach, witnessing our newest citizens make the pledge. We welcomed them by assisting Mayor Greg Conkey and Member for the Riverina, Michael McCormack hand out their certificates and medals. We were then treated to an outstanding, and moving, musical performance by the Australian Army Bank Kapooka.
This month we continued our mission to help out locals in need by donating blood with Miss Wagga Wagga 2016 Melissa McKinnon, and the entrants of the 2017 quest. It was great to catch up with the entrants again and giving blood is so painless and rewarding – it gets easier every time!
Our Wagga Takes Two fundraising efforts are in full swing, ahead of our singing performances in April – Sarah raising money for the Wagga Wagga Women’s Health Centre, and Jes supporting the Specialist Medical Resources Foundation. You may have heard us on the airways talking about our events on Triple M Riverina with Potsy and Leighton and Hit93.1 Riverina with Whitto and Ash.

Lastly, applications are now open, for both interested charities, and applicants for the 2018 Miss Wagga Wagga Quest, closing on February 20th. We couldn’t recommend it more to the young women of Wagga – so step outside your comfort zone, or encourage someone you know to take the leap!
