May kicked off with a visit to the vampire, as we continue our blood donation mission with 2016 Miss Wagga Wagga Melissa McKinnon. We also recruited some of the quest’s new entrants to join us! At the moment there is a critical need for blood supply, with the Red Cross Blood Service desperately urging people with O-Negative or O-positive blood types to give. We promise the small prick is worth the genuine feeling of being able to help people, and the free cookies and kit-kats!
Sarah attended Australia’s Biggest Morning ‘High’ Tea event at The International Hotel, hosted by the Cancer Council. She welcomed people at the door and had the pleasure of hearing from Bec Braid, a Wagga mum who has survived a devastating breast cancer diagnosis. Many cancer survivors and their families filled the room for a beautiful afternoon of reflection and celebration.
We were invited to speak at a South Wagga Apex meeting at the Sportsman’s Hotel and enjoyed sharing the highlights of our year, some history of the quest and a bit about ourselves and how we came to be entwined in this adventure! We met a great bunch of men - all valuing charity work and friendship. It was wonderful to hear more about the club and the goodwill it offers the community.
Rosie Batty’s visit to Wagga was a significant part of this month’s official engagements. The anti-domestic violence campaigner has ignited a powerful conversation in the city. Rosie spoke about the challenges Wagga faces in changing behaviour, influencing attitudes and addressing the city’s distressingly high rates of domestic violence. She’s backing a new campaign hosted by the Wagga Women’s Health Centre, called ‘DV2650’, and we as titleholders also support this initiative to bring positive change to the city. At the mayoral reception to welcome Rosie, we also had the pleasure of meeting Ray Martin who was here to film part of his documentary ‘Dark Secrets’ about domestic violence in regional Australia (particularly exciting for Sarah as a journalist, to meet a veteran in the industry!).
Jes attended a mayoral reception for Wagga’s latest Walk of Honour recipient, Jim Elphick. The 94 year old has been contributing to the Wagga tennis scene since 1951 and spent 26 years as the President of the Wagga Wagga Tennis Association. Congratulations Jim, you’re dedication to local sport is highly admirable! You can now sport his plaque on Baylis Street among other local legends.
Sarah participated in National Simultaneous Storytime by visiting the Wagga Wagga Early Years Learning Centre in Glenfield. She was invited to read this year’s picture book ‘The Cow Tripped Over the Moon’ and was delighted to meet the polite, curious and attentive youngsters who had lots of questions for her about the quest!
Jes’ voice would have been heard over the airways on your drive to work this month as she joined Whitto on Hit Riverina as a ‘fill in’ guest. She helped host the morning show in studio, playing DJ and talking every topic under the sun – she has quite a knack for radio!
We finished off our Autumn adventures with a bang, attending Kurrajong Race Day at the Murrumbidgee Turf Club. It was such a fantastic community day out and a credit to the organisers, who are passionate about supporting people with a disability across our region. The third biggest race day on Wagga’s calendar, this year the crowd of 5500 people smashed records.
